It is all about Diversification

It is all about Diversification

P W White & Partners have been recommending and monitoring risk rated portfolios for many years. Our responsibility is to analyse different firms to ensure that their processes are robust, their charges are reasonable and that they perform well against a given benchmark.

This has become even more important in recent weeks in the light of headlines concerning Neil Woodford’s fund. He was once the darling fund manager who could do no wrong when he managed money with Invesco Perpetual, but his performance has suffered badly in recent times causing him to issue a public apology. However, this probably hasn’t gone far enough in the minds of some investors who are unable to withdraw their funds and are now nursing significant losses.

This is why we use investment providers that have expertise in Multi Asset investing, as well as a robust risk and volatility management process. In our experience, investing in a variety of assets offers the opportunity of mixing both higher returns with lower risk. Put simply, this form of diversification is a risk management strategy that mixes a variety of investments within a portfolio. Essentially, you are hedging your bets.

This means that you can get on and do the things they want to do without having to worry about whether you should be in UK Equities, US Bonds or Commercial Property. More importantly, it ensures that your exposure to any one individual fund is extremely limited.

But you don’t just have to believe us when we discuss diversification. A recent survey from Global Investment House, Legg Mason, highlighted that advised investors generated a higher return than those people who had managed their own money, mainly due to diversification.

In the survey, Alex Barry, head of UK Distribution at Legg Mason, said:

“…..our research shows a strong and clear correlation between taking advice and higher returns….a good adviser will take a considered view on higher-risk investments and search for higher returns in areas that perhaps most DIY investors wouldn’t, while at the same time ensuring that clients are adequately diversified to withstand any market shocks.”

We will continue to support our client base with our robust investment process, leaving you to get on with more important matters. Should you wish to read the Legg Mason article in more detail, simply click on the link below
