The massive increase in internet usage has led to
large numbers of businesses establishing an online presence. In
some cases this simply means an 'online brochure', but for others
it has meant the opportunity for full e-commerce.
When web sites are set up, what is not usually considered is the
potential problems that may arise through:
-
Copyright infringements
-
Data protection
-
Security
-
Out of date information
It is possible to insure your business against
action taken as a result of difficulties from your corporate web
site and, for the moment at least, premiums are very reasonable.
Below are some examples highlighting the problems that may be
encountered in using e-commerce:
Defamation
A staff member of a very large insurance company issued e-mails
suggesting that a rival insurer was under investigation by the
DTI. There was no truth in this and a substantial six-figure
amount was agreed in an out-of-court settlement.
Viruses
An e-mail brought almost 60 major companies in the USA to a
standstill and affected many thousands of other companies
throughout the world.
Hacking & Fraud
Two hackers made a substantial amount of money by breaking into an
internet-based system. The President of the company that operated
the system had said that the system was impenetrable and offered a
sizeable reward to anyone who could prove otherwise. The hackers
took only minutes to gain access to the site.
